Mrs. Sherlene E. Blackwood, MSN, RN, FNP was born and raised in Dunn, North Carolina. She began her career in the healthcare field as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. She also provided care in two local nursing homes.
Driven to expand her healthcare abilities, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Nurse Practitioner Program. As part of her training in the UNC-CH Nurse Practitioner’s program, she spent time with the providers and staff at ABC Pediatrics to experience pediatric outpatient care. It was during this time that her attention to detail, her warm and empathetic approach to patients, her enthusiastic personality and her true love for children made it clear that she would make a wonderful addition to the healthcare team at ABC Pediatrics. In May, 2016, she earned her Masters of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and in August, 2016, joined our ABC Pediatrics’ Family. Her special areas of interest include newborn feeding issues, adolescent dermatology, and childhood obesity.
She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and has been inducted into nursing’s only honor society, Sigma Theta Tau.
She and her husband are the proud parents of one daughter and live in Dunn. They are active members of Central Baptist Church.
Q & A Session with Mrs. Sherlene Blackwood, MSN, RN, FNP
What interested you about becoming a Nurse Practitioner?
“After being a registered nurse for nearly a decade, I saw firsthand how poor health leads to a poor quality of life. Often patient education is the key in better health. I knew at that moment my role in healthcare had change. Primary care allows me to meet with patients, find out their individual barriers to good health and help the patient break those barriers with meaningful interventions. My focus is not only making the patient feel well today, but leading them on the path to better overall health. Several studies have demonstrated good health leads to a better life. I find it an honor and a blessing to help others to be their best self.”
What made you choose pediatrics?
“So why pediatrics?- If you told me three years ago I would be practicing in pediatrics, I would not have believed you. During my pediatric courses my mindset changed drastically! I not only enjoyed the pediatric lectures, I was excited to go to class. Then, during my clinical rotation, I found that I could easily and effectively talk to kids about anything! I saw firsthand how incredibly resilient children are. At the end of the clinical day, I felt touched by each patient and his or her family. I also felt that my work had meaning and value.”
What made you choose ABC Pediatrics?
“Why ABC?- I am no stranger to ABC, our 11 year daughter, Taylor, has been a patient of ABC since birth. Every interaction, I have had here as the mother of a patient has been amazing. Providers are not only knowledgeable and passionate about their work, but extremely caring, not only toward the patient, but parents too. I wanted to be with the best pediatric practice in the area, so it was a simple decision.”
